Thought of the Night: The Deviantart Paradox?

Sun May 21, 2006, 9:03 PM
Are comments recieved on deviantart non-representative of the majority of comments that you'd otherwise recieve in "the real world", because essentially everyone on deviantart does their -own- art as well? (at whatever level of skill) Thus any time that you get a comment, it's more likely to be -another- artist who'll be able to appreciate the effort that went into the work more than a layperson...

Though actually I'm not sure whether that's a valid argument that they'd like it better, but it's not like DA is awash with critical analysis of people's art or anything, which is what the opposite argument would lead towards, implying that an all-artist audience would lead to more informed critiqueing.

Unsure...

I think that there are some factors that should be considered. For once, that even though DA's all-artist community would, in theory, mean that the critical analysis would extend further than ''that's pretty'', or beyond the liking of disliking of the characters featured in the works themselves (many are fanart-fanfics, many get critiqued solely on the introduction of this or that fictional character), when it comes to the facts, an almost 90% of the comments are ''great'' ''pretty'' or any other synonym of the pair.

That's why I don't think DA can be thought in terms of critical analysis, and that any real appreciation can't be expected, not beyond a liking-disliking basis -at least not in a majority of the comments received, there's always the exception-, but that it *can* be considered as a kind of social gathering of people interested in art, and a place to exchange the way someone sees what he or she does, with other people. In other words, I think DA works better as a place to exchange views and get in contact with other people with the art-interest in common, than as a place where any kind of critical analysis (real or not) takes place.

It can also be said that itīs a very very mad social/anthropologic experiment -not an artistic one, as I believe that DA grows farther and farther from that each time-. It is really wonderful (and sometimes frightening) the kind of codes that emerge from a community like this.

Hope it works with the uncertainty, and if it doesn't, well, itīs just another grain of sand. Discard if useless.

I like the phrase "mad social/anthropologic experiment". MAD SCIENCE! But yeah perhaps DA should just be considered a "gallery" wherein only fleeting, glancing critique occurs. (actually, the site conceptart.org has, I've found a very strident group of critiquers, so if I ever get enough time to need it, I think that I'd go there for my in-depth artistic review.)

I still wonder, however, how many people create accounts on DA and -don't- have art of their own to put up there. And again, perhaps anyone without art to host on DA gets kept out in the cold (by their own lack of effort) and doesn't get involved with DA, doesn't make comments, just skulks its fine artistry. Hard to say for sure.
